Quartz is the second most common mineral in Earth's crust, it’s classified as a mineral because it demonstrates crystallinity. Milky quartz is the most abundant type of crystalline quartz. The milky whiteness of the rock can be caused by liquids and, or, gasses trapped while the crystal was forming. When I picked this rock I was drawn to it because of the way the white swells inside looked like clouds. I didn’t have to cut this rock, because it was already tiny, so tiny some people thought it was too small to shape, but I shaped it into a perfect flat-backed diamond shape using the diamond mess wheel on the lapidary machine, a machine than shapes and polishes rocks. The grit on the diamond mesh wheel, with help from water being constantly streamed onto its spinning surface, instantly perfected the shape of my rock. Next I used the refining wheel to smooth out scratches and dips that were left behind from the previous wheel. The last 2 wheels ensured that my rock was clean, soft, and shiny, perfecting it by removing anything unattractive. I took the rock back inside and used super glue to attach a bail to the back of it. The bail lets me attach the rock to something, a chain for instance. I put twine on it and made it into a necklace with a clasp and everything!
This whole process was great because I was motivated by the idea of creating a beautiful product and I wanted to do my best. I also liked how Jiapsi took a lead on this project and shared this experience with his classmates, it was nice to work on a project on a project. This was a really fun use of time.
