Update on the rock candy: on February 11th we decided to finish the experiment. We observed each jar and... every very single jar we made individually, failed. Not a single crystal! However, there was one jar that DID crystalize! It was filled with sugar crystals! In case our experiment failed, we had made an extra jar that we didn't really think would work. It had three cups of sugar opposed to two, but still one cup of water, it had food coloring in it, but no flavoring. One or more of these elements contributed to it succeeding without the others. Andrew warned us that the flavoring might change the consistency, but I think it was the sugar water ratio, the solution was much thicker than the others. Now we know, if we every want to make rock candy again, to not underdo the sugar! This yummy experiment is over and thanks to that extra jar, we can say that we are the first students in Andrews class to make successful rock candy!
